Apprenticeships

What is it?

Apprenticeships give you the chance to earn while you learn! It is a work-based vocational scheme where you can study for a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), a Technical Certificate and Key Skills qualification whilst working full time.

As an Apprentice, you will be in full-time employment, receiving a wage, aiming for a technical, supervisory or junior management role.

But Apprenticeships are not everyone's cup of tea. You will need to decide whether you can mix working for an employer one day, then studying for a qualification at a college (for example) the next. An apprenticeship will suit you if you are determined to do well in the world of work and are not afraid to commit yourself to long term training and studying (1 – 5 years).

Course content:

There are different types of Apprenticeships available and which Apprenticeship is right for you will depend on your experience and what is available in your area. All Apprenticeships will follow a structured programme to develop the practical skills required for your job and wider all-round skills.

Throughout your Apprenticeship your employer will give you on-the-job training but you will also work with a learning provider to give you the key skills that will be useful in the job market e.g. team working, problem solving and communication. You will also study for a Technical Certificate which will give you further knowledge of the area that you are working in.

Duration:

There is no set time limit to complete your Apprenticeship and the length of your Apprenticeship will vary depending on the ability of you, the Apprenticeship and your employer’s requirements. On a whole an apprentice will take between 12 – 24 months to complete but some take less time and others more time (up to 5 years). For this reason it is important that you have the commitment to see it through!

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for Apprenticeships but employers will want Apprentices that are:

  • Serious
  • Committed
  • Genuinely interested in the industry that they have chosen to work in
  • Have researched the industry that they would like to work in
  • Prepared for further study
  • Happy to work as a team and also able to show initiative when working alone
