About the College:
Weston College is one of the fastest growing Further Education Colleges in the UK, offering more than 800 full and part-time academic, work related and leisure courses to students from around North Somerset.
The high quality of our education and training provision also attracts students from other parts of the UK as well as from abroad.

NVQ 1- Food Preparation and Cooking
1 year full-time
Entry requirements - You must be able to demonstrate an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn to study this course. You do not need any formal qualifications.
Each industry sector in the UK has its own set of occupational standards. These standards describe exactly what you ned to know and what you should be able to do for every work activity carried out within that sector.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are qualifications that assess your ability to work to these standards. An NVQ is understood and valued by employers.
The NVQ 1 in Food Preparation and Cooking is made up of 10 units - 5 cores units and 5 optional ones.
The core units are:
- Maintain a safe and secure working environment
- Develop effective working relationships
- Clean food production areas, equipment and utensils
- Maintain and handle knives
- Maintain hygiene in food storage, preparation and cooking
The optional units are selected by the College and may include baking, vegetable preparation, boil, poach and steam food or bread products.
You can gain additional qualifications alongside your main course, including Key Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and IT and also more specialist awards that are relevant to your subject.
NVQ 2 - Professional Cookery
2 years full-time.
Entry requirements - You will need 4 GCSEs in A - E range or an appropriate Level 1 qualification such as NVQ or BTEC Introductory Certificate / Diploma.
This course is made up of 13 units, 6 core units and 7 additional units are selected by the College. You will also work towards your NVQ Level 2 Food and Drink Service award as part of this programme.
The core units are:
- Create and maintain effective working relationships
- Maintain and promote hygiene in food storage, preparation and cooking
- Clean food production areas, equipment and utensils
- Maintain, handle and clean knives
- Maintain a safe and secure working environment
- Set up and close kitchen
The optional units are selected by the College and may include cooking, finishing and presenting flour and dough and tray-baked products, basic fish dishes, maintaining and dealing with payments or supervising team members.
You may also have the possibility to gain qualifications including Key Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and IT and specialist awards that are relevant to your subject.
NVQ 3 - Food Preparation and Cooking (kitchen and larder)
1 year full-time.
Entry requirements - NVQ 2 Professional Cookery or equivalent. Any questions with regards entry requirements will be discussed at interview.
This course is made up of 10 units, 7 core units and 3 additional units are selected by the College.
The core units are:
- Control the receipt, storage and issue of resources
- Prepare, cook and finish complex fish dishes
- Monitor and maintain the health, safety and security of workers, customers and other members of the public
- Prepare, cook and finish complex meat and poultry dishes
- Prepare, cook and finish complex sauces and cold dressings
- Prepare cook and finish complex vegetable dishes
- Manage oneself
You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include Key Skills in Numeracy, Literacy and IT and can also include specialist awards that are relevant to your subject.
BTEC Introductory Diploma - Hospitality, Travel and Tourism
1 year full-time.

This practical, work-based course combines academic study and develops your practical skills and knowledge. It is made up of 18 units. You will study 5 core units and 13 specialist units.

Apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering
Up to 2 years part-time
Entry requirements - You must be able to demonstrate an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn to study this course. You do not need any formal qualification. You must also be employed in an organisation in a relevant role for a t least 16 hours per week. If you don't have an employer, the College will support you to find a suitable employer at the start of your Apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships are usually only open to people aged between 16 and 23.
As an apprentice you will learn both when you are at work and when you attend college. In addition to earning a salary, you will develop the skills needed for employment in this sector. As an apprentice you will spend the majority of the week working for an employer and learning in the workplace. Then come into College for one day a week to gain support from your tutors and learn about the technical aspects of your job role.
To achieve the apprenticeship you will need to complete a number of qualifications including NVQ 2 in Food Preparation and Cooking and Key skills in literacy, numeracy and IT.
Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering
Up to 2 years part-time

Flexible start dates / times
Essential Food Hygiene
This one day course is a requirement for employment in many hospitality organisations. It is recognised as good practice by the Environmental Health Office and is endorsed by the Royal Society of Health, for all staff involved in handling food.
Course are also available through Train to Gain with work-based assessment

Travel and Tourism City & Guilds First Diploma Level 2
This course is designed to enable you to learn about the travel and tourism industry with an emphasis on practical, work-related projects and assignments. During this course, you will develop a greater understanding of this industry and can then progress to the next level of study or consider employment in this rapidly expanding sector.
Airline Cabin Crew Certificate Level 2
This course is ideal if you are interested in a career as air cabin crew or ground staff. This national qualification is recognised by many airlines as a first step onto their training programmes. It provides a good introduction to the roles and responsibilities of aircrew and ground staff. During the course you will develop practical skills in problem-solving, customer are and communication as well as developing an understanding of the travel and tourism industry.
Travel and Tourism BTEC Award Level 3
The BTEC award in travel and tourism is the ideal way to gain a Level 3 qualification in this rapidly expanding area of the economy. Units include travel and tourism marketing, travel and tourism products and services, tourist destinations and customer service in travel and tourism.
