Foundation Degree
What is it?
Foundation Degrees ensure that you graduate with the skills needed to take you forward in your chosen career. Foundation Degrees are designed in partnership with employers, colleges and university partners to ensure quality and maximise your employability. As they are validated by universities, Foundation Degrees provide you with the opportunity to top up to a degree level qualification.
Course content:
The content of foundation degrees varies from course to course but you should expect to learn;
- Specialist skills and knowledge relevant to your chosen sector of the industry
- Practical work experience skills
- General work skills such as reasoning, professionalism and work process management, to supervisory or management level.
- Key skills - communication, IT and problem solving.
Once completed, this flexible qualification enables you to choose whether to focus on your career or continue studying to gain an Honours Degree.
Duration:
Part time study:
If you are restricted from studying full time because of work or other commitments, you can do a part time Foundation Degree which can be completed in 3 to 4 years. As with a full time Foundation Degree there will be different options on how your learning is organised. You can mix online or distance learning with studying at college or university or even in the workplace. This flexibility will depend on the course you choose and the college or university providing it.
Studying at work:
Foundation Degrees are career driven and therefore there is the option of studying without having to put your current job on hold. If this method of learning is chosen the learning and development done through your job can form a large part of your Foundation Degree. A work-based Foundation Degree is a good way of learning while you earn.
Full time study:
Many students choosing Foundation Degrees opt to study full time. A full time Foundation Degree usually takes 2 years to complete.
Once you have completed your Foundation Degree you will have the option to top-up to a full Honours Degree in just 1 year (full time).
Entry Requirements:
Entry requirements for Foundation Degrees vary. A minimum of one A Level, a pass at BTEC National or work experience is normally required. It is recommended that you contact the university or college offering the Foundation Degree directly for further information.
